I don't know about a consensus but the cimbasso sounds like barking dogs. To quote Will Rogers, "I never heard or played a cimbasso I liked."
My opinion, the soundclips that Carl Kleinstuber has on his website, played on an F contrabass trumpet, sound better than any cimbasso I every heard.
Please don't write and tell us about the moving cimbasso performance you heard last year. I'm still trying to recover from the fine sarrusaphone recital that brought tears to my eyes.
