As long as I concentrate on what I'm doing and get the "ideal" in my head, I do OK wherever I am, eyes open or closed. I cannot, however, practice well while there are other people loudly practicing different stuff around me. That really distracts me. For example, going to high school band clinic, honor band, etc., tryouts where a lot of instruments go warm-up on the same room. It's a madhouse. you can tell I have bad memories of that.
It depends on how well you can concentrate on what you are doing I guess. Sometimes a small cluttered room can really make you listen to your sound. It lets you REALLY know what you sound like.
