Our local community band has just assembled a brass quintet. We got together Tuesday evening for the first time, and read a bunch of charts.
I figure if we practice hard for about five years, we might achieve upper-mediocre abilities. And my F tuba fingerings are much rustier than I imagined they could be, not helped by the work hammering of the last three weeks (plus the holidays, plus the fact that my wife and I bought and--hopefully--sold a house) which has kept the chops distant from the tuba.
But boy am I glad to be back in a brass quintet! There's just something about that ensemble that satisfies the soul. We played everything from the Renaiassance to the Beatles, and every bit of it was fun, fun, fun.
