Unless you're my size and a low leadpipe would be a definite negative. One of the reasons I got rid of my older King 2341 was because the leadpipe was so low that I had to bend a little to play, even with it as high as I could get it on my lap. I got a tuba that fits me better, and it has improved my air support significantly. The new King leadpipe is much better placed for me. I suggest trying out any tuba you buy for fit before buying if at all possible.
In answer to the original question, I think that the VMI is a very good tuba, especially for the price, and would serve a hobby player well.
