I always try to leave the baggage tag on the handle until the gate person sees it on the return flight. They'll be more likely to believe you when you say "you allowed it as checked baggage to get here....you should allow it for the return!" However, I always try the skycaps first. $10 goes a long way toward getting a suitcase and a tuba checked, no questions (except the ones required by law) asked.

As far as flying since 9/11, I've been on a couple of trips to New York, and I had no problems coming or going with a tuba. Mouthpieces in my carry-on bag raised no questions. On the return from LaGuardia, my bags were checked, then taken (with me in tow) to a room where the tuba case was run through a giant x-ray machine. It came tumbling out the other end, and spilled onto the floor. Thank goodness for Walt Johnson.
