It's not like you come away with nothing. The time you spend on a competition should be used to improve your playing. The main benefit of entering competition is to raise your own level of playing. Therefore the time you spend will not have been wasted regardless of the competition outcome. Moneywise, you shouldn't be spending that much on a competition anyway. The cost of attedning a conference to take part in a competition should be made up by the many people you meet and experiences you have.
