A thing that I forgot:
Especially with the Aebersold books - Blues is a good basis to start with playing it a lot - in the beginning it's quite difficult to follow the form of more advanced songs so start out with playing blues a lot in all keys.
If you have the possibility look for a companion tuba player to play with - one plays bass the other one the solo and you can switch roles after some choruses - so you'll learn how to play a solid jazz bass also. That's perhaps not as much fun as improvising, but you can use it a lot and it teaches you a lot about the harmonic ongoings also.
