Yes, a beam is stronger the deeper it is. I don't think a composite would get all the benefits of this, however, because the fabric would be in the middle of the composite where it does not contribute any needed depth. The epoxy isn't what provides the tensile strength. If you could use two layers of fabric, spaced apart, such that the epoxy binder just covered them on the surface, then you could get the benefit of the deeper section.

I think you'd exploit the beam strength better with a deep metal bar. Cerveny used a metal bar soldered edge-on to the bottom bow, and this was quite strong. Of course, it isn't so comfortable on your lap. It also didn't extend far enough around the sides to prevent many common bottom-bow denting situations.
