You can't work that way, especially in the upper register. You could have the shank milled down, and/or have a bigger receiver placed on the leadpipe. You might want to get Dillon's AGR (adjustable gap receiver). If that won't do the trick, you may need to consider having the main tuning slide cut, if there's sufficient length to do so. Also, since you described your horn as being a BAT, maybe the 48 is a bit too big for it (?). You might want to begin by trying something shallower, or something narrower, or even a combination of the two - who knows? I don't know the 48, but the combination of big horns and big m.p.'s can lead to troubles in the tuning department.
