I agree with Barry about being careful of using too large a mouthpiece, though the PT-48 isn't all THAT big.

But before you do anything else, obtain a mouthpiece that fits the shank. A Conn Helleberg would be a good one to try, or an older Bach 18 (my understanding is that the older ones have a slightly smaller shank). If you would like to spend more, then Doug Elliott can supply you with a mouthpiece with a perfectly fitting shank and whatever cup and rim makes you feel good. He can also advise you on intonation difficulties, and how the mouthpieces might affect them.

As a general rule, though, ALWAYS optimize the mouthpiece before considering any surgery on the instrument.
