I remember back then very well. I took my first audition in 1982. Internet aside, information was distributed the same way back then as it is now...teacher to student, and advertisements in the International Musician. While I can't think of any way to quickly research the issue, my bet is that there were as few jobs coming open each year back then as there are now.
