If you have the time, Musik Glier (just southeast of hannover, 2 1/2 hours from Berlin on a bad day) has a notable number of large brass instruments available for playing. I tested about twelve different makes and models and ran out of time before I ran out of instruments I'd like to have played. Doug spoke briefly on the handmade instruments in the former east. The old Stasi band (now Luftwaffe) had a couple of great instruments without serial numbers that were nice. I believe they told me that the instrument maker was still in business. Most of the local horns I remember were third shelf Taiwan bodies with German valve sets. Beware these!! Make sure that you check out the music instrument museum near the Philharmonie before you leave.
