Actually the tuba had been invented, but not valves. This was known as the "au naturel" tuba and required two people to play it: one to blow into the mouthpiece, and the second person worked a plunger in and out of the bell to "stop" the notes. Although quite awkward, this instrument was capable of producing some incredibly pleasing gurgling sounds. It fell out of favor after it was attempted to use it to play "Bridle March," (sorry, that's not a typo, this is the version of 'Wedding March' used when the bride resembles a horse) at the housewarming party for Mad King Ludwig's "Neuschwanstein" castle. A diplomatic incident resulted when the melody was mistaken for the abdominal rumblings of the duchess from a neighboring principality.

(Yes, I realize that few or no other people found that amusing.....)
