I agree, although the director might be very understanding and just happy to get some supplement for an otherwise thin lower end. I have done this with bassoon and cello parts, as well as bass and trombone, and playing Beethoven, Schubert and Handel, among others. If you listen carefully to what you are adding, keep a tight control on the volume, and, as you say, stop if it doesn't fit or otherwise just isn't working, I think you can easily conclude that these guys would have written tuba parts had they only known.

This is not an academic argument, and the pros and purists out there will tell me my head's wedged, but I wager my grin factor from playing is way above average from experiences like this.
