First off, it's not true that Jake played EVERYTHING on his big York. Would you want to play all those really high Berlioz and Mendelssohn excerpts on a 5/4 CC? How about the V-W concerto, or the John Williams one? But if you want to start with a 5/4 CC now, go into it knowing that you'll need to work towards buying a good F or Eb somewhere down the road. Those are just the facts of life for a working, orchestral and chamber-music tuba player. If you just want to play in a local community band or brass band, then it's not such an issue (nothing wrong with that). If you look below, you'll see that someone's selling a Rudi Meinl 4345 *piston* for a very fair price. Good luck to you.
