Just remember that all the great things you read/hear about various tubas are very good advice on which ones to PLAY TEST! Not just buy. When a rotary F tuba is advertised and rhapsodized about as having an excellent low range, that usually means.....compared to other rotary F tubas. Which is very definitely not the same punch you'll get out of a contrabass.
It is definitely worth the price of the plane ticket to visit a major tuba dealer and play everything they will let you. If I had done that, I would have saved enough shipping costs back and forth to pay for the ticket.
