I find this as well with my playing. I use a PT48 and a PT88 on a HB21. The 48 is supposed to be funnel shaped and the 88 more of a bowl. I find that the 48 has quite a bit brighter sound than the 88.
I wonder if the specs. on the custom music site are accurate...... According to the site, the 48 has a larger diameter and a larger throat bore. The 88 then has a deeper cup. Even with the smaller throat, the 88 seems quite a bit freer blowing. But yet, a funnel shaped bowl (the 48)was supposed to have less resistance?
I like the sound of both mouthpieces. I try not to think about the specs so much.....In fact, I try not to think at all. It's easier that way.
