I can speak as some-one that got it the wrong way round.

I started playing at age 9, coming over from trumpet, so to make things easier, i was handed an Eb, fingering the same, etc, etc, etc. I stuck with Eb for 20 years, In the UK it is alot more common than in European Continent and US. I will say im an amateur, not pro, so this did fine. A few years ago i was financially able to justify a Miraphone 188 CC (Actually i just didnt tell the wife). The size and pitch of the instrument forced me to almost relearn the way i played. the 188 is now my main horn, only using my Eb and F when in small ensembles, or forced to stand and play.

In retrospect, it is so much easier to develop the fundamentals on a contrabass, then apply them to a bass than the other way round.
