there is no way I would purchase a tuba without either trying it out for a while first or being sure that I could return it for only the cost of shipping. one tuba that I used to own was purchased without playing it first, but I could have returned it if I didn't like it. the other four tubas I have purchased in my playing time were played significantly before deciding if I wanted to keep them or not.

I would think that any serious player would do the same. for students and schools, on the other hand, it probably doesn't make a whole lot of difference, so long as the horn plays relatively well in tune in the "cash register," and the valves go up and down (or back and forth, whichever the case may be).
