Contact the shop where you once worked, and get the information from them on exactly what they used, and be persistent if necessary. Some shops use chemicals readily available from Allied, Ferree's, etc., but I have known of shops who have a local chemist cook up something for them, ususally in an attempt to 1) save money or 2) have a more powerful cleaner. Even if the shop does not have the data on what it is, the supplier will, and is required to make a Material Safety Data Sheet available for each chemical sold.
You want to know what the chemical was for two reasons; First, because of the reaction you had, and second, to determine if this is one of the chemicals that your body doesn't get rid of, or "stores". The possibility of further exposure building the toxicity is important. That is why I try to be very careful in the shop.
