I agree! I'd appreciate any techniques for building up air capacity as well. As a piccolo player I have a pretty good lung capacity, but it's just a whole different ball game playing the tuba. I take the biggest breaths I can, breath from the very depths of my diaphragm, and still I can not get through more than a few measures (of a very easy piece) before the sound starts to kind of bubble and crack. I can barely go lower than a D (12, first one below the staff) and if I do, I have to take a huge breath immediately before it, which really breaks up the flow of what I'm trying to play. I think that although flute/piccolo requires a great deal of air as well, it lasts longer becuase it is expelled much more controlledly and through the obviously much tighter ambouchure. (sorry..I can't figure out the spelling on that right now.) Any techniques for beginners on tuba or brass instruments all together to build up endurance?
