The most common reason for running out of air is the failure to take a breath earlier, at a point which would have been (by definition) less harmful to the music.

Every time you feel short of breath during rehearsal, scan back and find the best place to take a breath...AND MARK IT.

Even on long, low, sustained notes - unless this is a solo, someone else is playing. Listen and pick a spot where youbreath will cause the least damage. MARK IT.

then...pay attention to the marks, and rehearse them just as seriously as you rehearse the other notes (rests...and breaths...are musical events just as important as the notes).

Of course, some of us play nearly as man "breaths" as "notes"...
