I owned a Pan American sousaphone for years, not playing it much, because I wasn't interested in being an active tuba player at the time. I bought my Pan American used and it was in pretty good shape, not requiring any repair work during the time I had it. I finally traded it in on a better tuba about 20 years ago. The Pan American is a student grade horn and not as robust as a more professional grade horn. The high notes are a little flat and the low notes are a little sharp, but the horn is all right for playing in a summer band and having fun with it. You may tire of it after awhile and want something better, like I did. One always has the right to change one's mind.
