I own 2 of these old beasts, and I have had removeable upright bells made to match the bell fronts.I use the upright bells when my school band plays indoors, and switch to the bell fronts when we perform outdoors, or if my tuba players are "weaker" then normal.
Changing the leadpipe may help your intonation problem.
