Well, if memory serves, you could buy a "vogie" Porsche 914 in 1970 for a little less than $3000. So if you figure that a good tuba back then cost about half as much as a mid-range car, then a new Willson BBb is an absolute bargain.
A silverplated 4-valve York "Monster" eefer back around 1915 cost about $200, about the same as a decent upright piano. But then, a new Model T ran only $500.
