Lee: What 1937 Conn catalog is that in? My 1937 Conn catalog doesn't have the 34J or 36J.
However, my 1934 Conn Upright Basses and Sousaphones catalog does list the 30J/34J (3/4 valves) as top action recording bell instruments, describing them as having "the same large bore, the same big detachable, adjustable 26-inch bell, and other features that have made the famous 36J so popular."
No mention of upright bells
The same 1934 catalog has the 20J/22J with a 24" recording bell. No 4 valve versions (24J/26J) in that catalog.
The illustrations of the 20J and 30J in the catalog are very similar.
