i was flying a lot with my tubas and they got damaged a lot too. once i used an old case with all the styrofoam ripped out and put in the tuba in the gigbag. worked pretty well - once, then the case was broken. if you want to be safe, buy an extra seat, or take the risk and get an insurance. good luck.
