Some Cerveny euphs had the valves stacked like cookies (oriented 90 degrees forward) with the keys attached directly to the rotor arms. On some old Civil-war-era baritones and cornets, you can see keys that operate like piston valves (up and down) that are coupled (usually via string linkage) to the rotors.
