Clarke studies are always good for technique and controlling the air stream. If your student is having trouble with range in
Tyrrell; lip slurs, smears, breathing exercises, and trying to extend the range chromatically would help more than a new etude book.
If he can play all of the Arban, all of the Tyrrell, and all of Rochut Book 1 with a high degree accuracy and musicality, then he is
better than most undergraduate college students. I do not believe that is the case, thus I suggest you set a higher standard of
execution from this player. If you are looking for something to "spice up" practice and lesson time the Mead concert studies
are nice (euphonium.net). Someone else suggested solos, great idea, however, you'll have to fix those range issues.
