IMO, the Haag is the best one I've played (Thayer or Hagmann valves)and at somewhere around $6000 the better deal. Probably about a 6 month wait. Thein is amazing workmanship, but more expensive. Definitely go for a contra in F. I played recently a BBb Thein that looked great, but was as hard to get a consistent sound out of as a Mirafone 57F. These horns sound great in the low register, but in the staff (many contra parts have "high" notes)they are like playing a BBb tuba in this register with all four valves down. Gurgly at best. Used contras are a mixed bag. Older Theins can be pretty squirrely, and most older contras have a weird double valve tuning system of a half step and a fifth. I think the German guys like the idea of slapping down a valve and being in BBb. The newer horns are available with normal valve tuning of C and Db, corresponding to F and Gb on a standard bass trombone.
