You would not be the first 'short" person to take up the bass bone seriously or possibly be a noted player of the instrument. I remember playing at Reagan's 2nd inaugural ball and sharing the bandstand with the Les Brown band. Les's brother Shorty was the bass trombonist and held his own quite well. He did however step on a small box to be in-line with the rest of the section while standing. He was also a tuba doubler.
