This is something I do all the time. Don't hesitate, just ask. I am sure you will find that he would be more than willing to perform with his band. He already knows how you play and that you are a good teacher, so the groundwork is laid. Don't beat around the bush about it. Any time I have asked, I always seem to get an enthusiastic response. As far as what to play, make sure you understand the ability of the band you are working with, then choose your piece from there. There are many good pieces for all ability levels. Good Luck
