I took up french horn at 45 and tuba at 53....and euphonium just a few months ago, when I had to play Bydlo.
Of the three, tuba is definitely the easiest to maintain embouchure on, at least for me. Horn is the hardest, euph in the middle. I find that if I do not play horn for a week, it takes 2-3 weeks to get back where I was; euph a little less...and tuba I can go play at band practice for two hours on Friday night and do just fine.
So my recommendation is obvious....but your mileage may vary. I'm a "natural" low horn player, always had difficulty with high horn, so it is logical that I find tuba the easiest to maintain.
