The only effective use I've ever heard of one was on the Harvey Phillips/Rich Matheson tuba consort album "Superhorns". One of the euphs (either Ashley Alexander or Buddy Baker) took a euph solo with a separate panned mike for each bell and kept switching back and forth from left to right channel. It was catchy and very effective.

By the way, this CD is a "must have" for anyone who appreciates great jazz, tuba, and euphonium. The lineup includes Harvey Phillips, Winston Morris, and Dan Perantoni on tuba, the fantastic Rich Matheson, Ashley Alexander, and Buddy Baker on euphonium, along with a stellar lineup of rhythm players. It just doesn't get much better than this.
