Each Eb player will have different experiences, and I really did like my 983, which had none of the problems (for me) that LV experienced. But I could never adapt to the extra resistance in the compensating low half octave down to the pedal Eb. The PT-72 mpc helped with this more than anything else. But once I tooted on a friends Willson Eb, it was love at first toot. Low register was EASY and OPEN by comparison, sound was noticeably bigger, and the upper register was also easy. IIRC, the voice of the horn was fairly consistent when moving up towards and passing middle C. The 983 sound lightens up in this range, and sounds different than the lower octaves. Depends on what you're looking for.
