Most of the muscles in the body can contract in opposition with other muscles, such as the bicep and tricep in the arm when you're "making a muscle." If you allow the muscles in the abdomen to contract in this manner (i.e., strength), you inhibit your ability to move the large volumes of air required for good breath support. Therefore, Mr. Jacobs recommended that you keep these muscles relaxed (i.e., weakness) so that you can easily take in large breaths and efficiently blow the air out.
