I was recently quite taken with a 52J, and didn't expect to be. After really liking the experience of playing it, I was ready to find all of its discrepancies with an electronic tuner in hand - but found very few indeed.

The standard answer you will get is the Miraphone. Tuba players are programmed into thinking "first CC tuba = Miraphone 186" and recommending such to most all students.

Yes, you'll be able to purchase a Miraphone for less. If they were priced the same, I'd have a lot of trouble trying to decide which to recommend. Why are these the only two choices? B&S (VMI, Perantucci, whatever) makes a rotary CC tuba in that price range (if bought from a competitive vendor) that behaves itself quite nicely as well...and if you can creep from $5000 to $6500, could you creep from $6500 to $8000? A couple of other choices exist at that price point, though the truly good ones that specifically come to mind are not commonly available.
