That's the way a physicist would do it.

A mathematician would use a highly-accurate tape measure (if there ever was such a thing) to find the circumference of every part of the tubing, and deduce the volume through calculations.

An engineer would look up the model and serial numbers in the Engineer's Book Of Tuba Volumes and read it there.
