Taylor Music in S. Dakota is offering a Holton BB346R BBb, which is the same Yamaha stencil (I believe) for $2,633, econo overhaul, with case, no trade. If you have a suitable horn to trade, it's (AT)2,333.
They also have a King 2341 BBb (new style) used for $2,411 with case.
Dillon's in NJ, has a "Tall 4/4 size BBb tuba with 16-1/2" upright bell and 4 front action rotors .748" bore. The original lacquer is about 50% gone. The horn has been used and there are numerous dents from small to medium, but no signs of abuse or major trauma. It's an ugly duckling that will provide years of musical enjoyment. No case."
This is offerred for $1895.
Upshot is, I think the bloke is right. If you're looking for a BBb player in 4 valves, which doesn't necessarily have to look perfect, there are numerous options under $3000.
