On the other hand, I don't agree that music can only be defined by what happens to tug at Mary Ann's heart. My heart may be sensitive to a different pull. I think we can define art (of which music is a subset) as that which pulls at somebody's heart. In so doing, we move out of our own taste into a more general definition, but one that still forces us out of the purely intellectual response. I agree that music has to be moving in addition to intriguing, but I don't think I'm the one that has to be moved in all cases.

My point was that I know people who are indeed moved by Cage's work, and therefore cannot label it as non-art. Separating what is intriguing from what is moving might not always be that easy. I can, however, say with conviction that it doesn't move me.
