I don't think you'll find many to agree, but I've found that a shallow cup/large throat is the most well-suited to a 186, and offers tremendous "Tommy Johnson-ish" ("straight ahead") low register response.
- You're not going to get the roundest sound out of a 186 regardless of mouthpiece...It ain't made that way.
- I've found that some of those mid-'70's vintage 186's (in particular) love a shallow cup. This vintage had an extra-small mouthpipe which, to me, is the most well-suited to the 186.
