I have two old Kings (1930's) with slides in the leadpipe that play just fine. Of course, that doesn't mean that all horns with tuning slides in the leadpipe play good. If you can get your hands on the horn for a toot... try it! There are lots of horns that have undesireable characteristics. No special tests.... just play it!
