I was in the Tiger Band 1992 & 1993. We had , if I remember correctly, 20 tuba players in 1992 and 22 in 1993. I can't speak to what they are using now (I only occasionally see them on tv here in Maryland) but the horn I used both years was wonderful.
I had just come in my freshman year from a good high school band program (Comeaux) and the first time I tried to play that monster Conn, I could hardly produce a tone. Our high school sousaphones were much smaller, and I guess I wasn't yet aware of what a man's tuba those Conns are.
It was great being in Tiger Band. I was lucky enough to play in the Wind Ensemble as well and that was great too.
I can't imagine 34 tubas in Tiger Band. I wish I could see them in person.
