In the Long Island Tuba Quartet, we've experimented with this over the years. We currently set up in more of a semi-circle, not directly facing each other. With a little adjustment, you can still twist to see the other members of the quartet when you want to. Facing the quartet from the audience, we have the tubas, both CC, on the left and the euphoniums, both Yamahas, on the right. We found that we hear each other better this way. The sound is warmer from the audience perspective with the bells not facing at them. Also, the audience can see us better, instead of our bells. It's also nice in small venues to be able to see the audience and for them to see your face.
