Because an average adult can just reach 7th position on a Bb trombone, which is the best reason I know of for why we have Bb trumpets, euphoniums, and tubas.
Juan Tizol (composer of "Caravan") played a large-bore valve trombone with 4 pistons, pitched in C. I have never seen another one like it.
