Hi,

Well the general size chart goes as follows..

3/4: quintets and chamber music
4/4: standard full size. Good all around size.
5/4: for larger individuals OR for larger ensembles
6/4: for larger orchestral settings. Helps with having a consistant timbre at high volumes and reduces the blattiness. Normal size to see in NY Phil, Chicago Sym, San Fran, etc..
7/4: rather rare custom horns. These are basically for the really big dudes who need a VERY large orchestral horn.

My first two horns were 4/4 size tubas. They did the trick for quite a while. I just recently bought a 6/4 Meinl Weston 2165 tuba. I did NOT buy it for it's size but rather for the dark sound that I had on it. Yes, I have another horn for smaller ensembles like quintets.
