OOOOps! I forgot to mention that the Giardinelli mouthpiece "try" set didn't take into consideration another variable... mouthpiece throat diameter. In all my experimentation, throat diameter also affected the playing characteristics, but only in the amount of "felt" resistance. The shape of the backbore, i.e: )(, || or () had the most effect on tone color, intonation and pitch.

I have ruined countless mouthpieces with the overzealous application of drill bits. Be cautious if you are going to bore your favorite mouthpiece; once you remove the metal, you can't put it back!
