F tubas seem to have their problems with pitch, but only because they are usually the "2nd" horn used by the artist. Picking up a cold F after playing BBb or CC will always result in poor intonation. I have played an F for over 30 years and have been disappointed in the five valve versions of the horn. Five valves limits the player to fewer sets of alternate fingerings which can place any F into proper tune. A six valve F has so many alternates that a mis-tuned note is inexcusable. Warming up an F is also a piece of work, especially in a cold concert hall. But the perfect F has yet to be built. Harry Critchley
