We'll,
I am a doubler also. For me, despite inovation and expantion of the tuba repertoir and venues for the tuba, I still can't get complete satisfaction. I love to play other instruments so I can play in ensembles where tuba is not a standard instrument. I like to bring my tuba on big band gigs for bass trombone, there always seems to be a chart that is more appropriate on tuba. I'm learning the bass as an expantion of my opportunities to play the bass function in ensembles. I am learning more about bass lines from a bass standpoint and then applying that back to the tuba. I don't think this tendencey is limited to the tuba. Many of the best musician I know double. Woodwindplayers out of necessity for sure. Trumpet players that play great piano. It is also a way to put more time in on music without screwing with your chops.
