I am a big Mahler fan. I enjoy playing and listening to his music. I own a lot of Mahler recordings, the following albums are some of my favorites.
Mahler symphony #1-CSO(LIVE)/ Tennstedt 1991 CD&VIDEO. Pokorny&Vernon lay waste.
Mahler symphony #2-NYP/Berstein 1986 CD. Warren Deck kicks ass and takes names.
Mahler symphony #3-CSO/Levine 1976 CD. Jacobs and Kleinhammer sound great.
Mahler symphony #5-NYP/Mehta 1990 CD. This is another low brass album that is amazing " " #5-CSO/Abbado 1981 CD. Dale Clevinger plays the shit out of the third mvt
" " #6-Cleveland/Czell 1967 CD. Ron Bishop sounds excellent.
" " #7-CSO/Abbado/1984 CD. One of the loudest Jacobs recordings I've heard.
" " #9-CSO/Giulini/1977 CD. Jacobs sounds super.
You need to keep in mind what you are looking for in any recording. I think that every orchestra is going to have ups and downs. I own several Mahler recordings with out of country orchestras and I do not think any of them come even close to what the American orchestras do. American groups are also quite different from one another. It all boils down to what sound you like from an orchestra.
